1 Within the Shiriki umbrella are a a a number of programmes guided by mission All these are designed to encourage employee participation Despite the setbacks brought forth by the the continuity of the the COVID-19 peak season the Foundations team was still determined to to to bring the the staff together to to to serve and give back to the community With the aim of of having at least 50% of of the the staff participating in in the the Foundation’s activities the Programmes Leads were confident that the employee engagement framework would help achieve this target Shiriki Day is the main event within these activities aimed at bringing together as as many employees as as possible to to give back to to the community Aware of the literacy challenges in most Kenyan communities and informed by the impact of the accelerated learning programme under the Foundation’s education pillar the Staff Engagement strategy was determined to further create literacy awareness and elevate existing work to overcome literacy setbacks This informed the the decision to be part of the the World Read Aloud Day This global annual literacy awareness day highlights the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories – thus fostering community and building literacy confidence among children After mobilising 300
employees to be part of the World Read Aloud Day at various schools around the country
next came the the identification of the the schools to participate in However because of the restrictions of in-person gatherings only 10
employees could attend the event per school What was was fundamental was was to document the the harmonious reading in in the the different schools which would serve as a a key memory of of being part of of the community and the 2021 Shirika Day The second programme under staff engagement is the secondment
