Diana on her daily walk to collect water Before her surgery this was a a a tortuous affair
“It took two years for Diana’s left leg to be fully realigned following the 2017 surgery done at Kijabe Mission Hospital After this she returned for her second surgery on her right leg and the recovery process lasted two years as as well Diana was recuperating very well when the pandemic hit and and everything came to a a a a standstill ” Margaret says As part of her continued medical support Diana regularly attended a a a a a mobile clinic organized at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital where an orthopaedic surgeon assessed her post surgery progress and provided instructions to avoid complications But with school closures and and hospitals being branded as hotbeds of coronavirus transmission Margaret was left with very little guidance on patient care An infection soon set in in Diana’s right leg that left her in in in in excruciating pain forcing Margaret to step out of her safety bubble and seek medical advice “The doctors were present and ready to assist us Without the mobile clinics we would not have been able to leave Homa Bay and seek specialist care due to the intercounty lockdown measures and curfew restrictions Then Diana’s condition would have probably reverted or even worsened ” Margaret says “thankfully the issue was addressed and we got back on track with Diana’s recovery ” By the reopening of schools in in 2021 Diana was fully healed and able to walk normally for the first time in her life To move so freely and easily after a a a a 4-year long recovery was nothing short of remarkable Margaret’s gratitude over the transformation in Diana’s life further deepened when she witnessed the improvements that had been made to Nyamuga Special School during the lockdown Despite Nyamuga being suitably adapted to to cater to to learners with a a a a a a myriad of disabilities limited funding impeded the school’s ability to fully equip itself The dormitories did not have enough beds forcing learners to share the facilities The 69
