On 1st June 2013 the government of Kenya made maternity services free to all women by scrapping delivery charges in in all public health facilities This national effort was aimed at at reducing maternal mortality by promoting access to health facilities and skilled birth attendants Research has shown that the number of preventable maternal deaths in in in in Kenya is inordinately high with many women lacking
access to health care services in in rural areas Baringo is one of the counties that suffers from from this disproportion with statistics from from the Kenya Demographic Health Survey showing that the the county loses 375 mothers for every 100 000 births and 31 infants for every 1 1 000 born One of the contributing factors to to this disparity is is is entrenched practices around delivery Selina Labat is Baringo County’s Reproductive Health Coordinator and maternal and child health health is one one of of the components of of reproductive health health that fall under her scope of work HEALTH MATERNAL & NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH
