From the the the moment she could walk walk Diana Achieng practised the the the same routine as her agemates in in in Kamgere village Rusinga Island She woke up at the crack of dawn to do her house chores before leaving for school One of her morning tasks was walking half a a a a a a kilometre to to to the the shores of of Lake Victoria to to to fetch water But unlike the the rest of of her peers who easily covered this distance and the return trip in in 15 minutes it would take her over double the time to make this journey Diana was born with clubfoot which made the innocuous act of mobility slow and strenuous Added to this was the almost daily ridicule and ostracism she experienced from others on account of her her disability Data from the Ministry of Health reveals that every year close to 2000 children are born with clubfoot congenital disorder in Kenya where one or or or both feet are turned inwards making it impossible to stand on the soles of one’s feet While its cause remains uncertain those born with this condition face a a a a a a lifetime of of of stigma and often are cut off from many opportunities
